On August 8, the CABS Business Career Development (BCD) Committee hosted an interactive Career Clinic at Hanhai in Burlingame. Graduate students, postdocs, scientists, and industry professionals gathered to discuss real career questions in a supportive, small-group setting.

How the Morning Unfolded

The morning began with a structured icebreaker. Participants introduced their backgrounds, shared one career goal, and identified a question they hoped to explore.

During the first roundtable session, facilitators encouraged participants to ask clarifying questions, share relevant experiences, and ensure everyone had an opportunity to speak. After a short break and table rotation, participants joined new groups for a second discussion round, gaining perspectives from people at different career stages and functions.

The event concluded with a full-group reflection and networking lunch, where participants shared common themes, practical takeaways, and next steps.

1. Navigating a Competitive Job Market

Graduate students, postdocs, and early-career professionals discussed the challenges of finding opportunities in today’s biotech market. Participants exchanged practical knowledge about resumes, interviews, referrals, networking, and evaluating opportunities.

One key takeaway was that online applications alone are often insufficient. Industry events, professional associations such as CABS, informational conversations, and authentic relationship-building can increase visibility and provide access to opportunities beyond public job boards.

Participants also noted that work authorization and immigration considerations can affect the timing and range of available opportunities. Understanding these constraints early can support a more focused job-search strategy.

2. Exploring Paths Beyond Academia and the Bench

Many participants were interested in moving from academia to industry or transitioning from technical R&D into Business Development, Project or Product Management, Venture Capital, and other cross-functional roles.

For scientists considering Business Development, participants emphasized learning to translate scientific findings into commercial value. Following market trends, partnership activity, financing news, and biopharma transactions can help build business awareness.

Informational interviews, professional events, volunteer leadership, and cross-functional projects can also help individuals explore new directions before making a full transition.

3. Evaluating a Long-Term Bench Career

Participants reflected on whether bench science matched their long-term interests. The discussion extended beyond scientific expertise to include managing experimental processes, delivering results on schedule, meeting deadlines, communicating across functions, and connecting scientific work to organizational goals.

Recognizing which responsibilities feel energizing—and which feel limiting—can help scientists choose between continued technical development, leadership, or another functional path.

4. Managing Up and Preparing for Promotion

Participants discussed how to communicate effectively with managers, increase visibility, influence decisions, and demonstrate readiness for leadership.

Managing up involves understanding organizational priorities, communicating progress clearly, anticipating challenges, and offering thoughtful solutions. Professionals can build leadership experience before receiving a formal title by mentoring colleagues, coordinating projects, improving team processes, and communicating their impact.

Moving Forward

The Career Clinic reinforced an important message: career development rarely has one correct answer. Progress often begins by asking better questions, learning from different experiences, and identifying one practical next step.

We sincerely thank our facilitators and participants for sharing openly and supporting one another.

Come with one career dilemma. Leave with new perspectives, meaningful connections, and an actionable next step.
